Bodegón de marcado verismo y crudeza naturalista, característico del Siglo de Oro español, que acerca al espectador a una representación directa de alimentos y animales muertos (cordero, gallo, cabeza de ternera, panes y utensilios).

La obra ingresó en el Museo del Prado sin atribución segura. Inicialmente se relacionó con Antonio de Pereda, aunque las diferencias técnicas descartaron esta hipótesis. Posteriormente se vinculó con Mateo Cerezo por su semejanza con bodegones conservados en México, atribución aceptada de forma provisional.
